Do All VW Cars Start the Same Way?
Most Volkswagen models from 1995 onwards are fitted with immobiliser systems that prevent the car from starting without the correct key. These systems use a transponder chip embedded in the key head, which communicates with the car to deactivate the immobiliser.
Earlier VWs (pre-2006) often had separate immobiliser boxes or ones integrated with the dashboard clocks. For these models, we can read the key profile directly from the lock and cut a new key without needing to remove the lock or use the vehicle’s security code.
From 2006 onwards, VW keys became more complex with pre-coded transponders, unique to each vehicle. While this boosts security, it also makes replacing keys trickier—unless you have the right tools and expertise.
