When multiple people will need access to multiple properties or areas, the simplest solution is often to install a master system so that one key can be used to access multiple areas.
Today’s master systems can be fairly complex, and are not nearly as simple as the “skeleton keys” of days past.
A simple master key system would involve multiple locks that were keyed both individually and separately. In this case, the master key is usually kept by only one person since it is capable of unlocking quite a few doors, but there are some exceptions, such as maintenance crews at apartment complexes where there may be a few keys in select, responsible hands that can open all of the doors. These keys are designed so that, although the master key will work everywhere, a key that was made only for one door will only open that door, and none of the others.
A more complex setup would involve a three tiered system, where there was one key (or set of keys) that could open all the doors, another that could open a select set of doors, such as a certain building, and then individual keys to open the doors individually as well. This is an especially good idea for property managers or owners that hire different maintenance workers on different properties.
As you can see, master systems can get pretty tricky, and there is lots of room for error. Trust the pros to get it done right the first time. Give Jay a call today on 082 651 6416 and let him answer all your master system questions.
When winter is closing in and the last thing you want is to have to sit and wait outside for someone to come home, give Jay a call on 082 651 6416 and let him warm up your day.
Possibly the biggest advantage of using a smart key is that it offers significant convenience. so drivers don’t have to worry about groping with the keyhole (especially in the dark), the door automatically unlocks when you’re close.
Improved Safety
Smart keys are a substantial improvement over conventional keys. The signal is encrypted, so hacking a smart key is difficult.
Likewise, in case of an emergency, the last thing you’d want is to be found outside fumbling with your car keys. With a smart key, you don’t need to reach into your pocket or backpack; the door is unlocked immediately.
Reduce Ignition Concerns
If you have a conventional car key, it will wear out after a while. Traditional keys are heavy, and most people often add other keys to the keyring.
This puts undue stress on the ignition, causing considerable wear and tear over time. That’s one of the reasons why push-start ignition systems last longer.
More notably, smart keys have battery indicators that will warn you well in advance when it’s running low. Replacing the battery is also incredibly simple, so you don’t need any specialised tools.

Q: I lost my original Mercedes Key; have no spare and I need a copy / duplicate made, how much will this cost?
A: That depends on the year, make and model as well as the availability of the code, type of key (chip, fob, push to start, remote), to name but a few of the variables.
Q: How do I know if my 2007 Mercedes Sprinter key had a chip in it? I understand that some keys need to be programmed and others donโt.
A: A good rule of thumb is that if the key had a plastic cover at the top and / or vehicle was manufactured after 2000, it most likely has a chip. Therefore, if youโve lost your Mercedes key and it had a chip, it will have to be programmed / coded on-site.
Below are some examples of the various Mercedes keys and remote โpush to start buttonโ fobs:
Fob remote โpush to startโ car key usually looks like some sort of remote, this fob car key has a chip and will need to be programmed.
Mercedes Benz remote car key
This is a Mercedes key that has a transponder chip and needs to be coded, the chip is located inside the cover at the top.
Mercedes Benz high security car key with chip
This is an image of a Mercedes key that does not contain a chip, it is a simple metal key and does not need to be coded.
Mercedes Benz non-transponder key – no programming necessary
ย ย ย
Q: My 1999 Mercedes E500 ignition key wonโt turn and my steering wheel is locked, what is the reason; do you need to change the ignition, what should I do?
A: There may be a few reasons why the ignition key wonโt turn; worn out key, rusted ignition or broken wafers.ย An experienced locksmith will be able to assess this on-site and advise accordingly, it is not always necessary to replace the ignition.
Replacement ignition cylinder
If you are looking for a new or replacement Mercedes key, contact Jay on 082 651 6416 with details of the make, model and year of your vehicle and he will quote you as well as advise of lead time if the stock needs to be placed on order.
Ever Experienced Being Locked Out Without a Locksmith?
A few years ago, a friend locked himself out of his car. It was an early Sunday morning, and most businesses were still closed. He tried everything; picking the lock on the door, wedging small objects under the weather strips, and even forcing the sunroof open to open the lock with a large, skinny stick he found in the bushes nearby. Not unexpectedly, none of these worked. What struck him the most was that he didnโt even know who locksmiths were when he was going through this experience. He couldโve had help immediately and been on his way in less than 10 minutes had he known who, or where, his local locksmith was. Thatโs why itโs so important to know who locksmiths are and what they can do for you in that situation.
Letโs Get This Straight What is a Locksmith?
Locksmiths are the professionals who open your car or house door when you need it the most. They save you from being stuck in the office parking lot during rush hour. They rescue you when youโve got a crying child in the house or car. Added to this, they make sure your belongings are safe from harm when they replace the locks in your house. Ultimately, they give you peace of mind when all you can do is sit on the corner waiting for help to arrive. In a nutshell, they will save you from your dilemma and get you back to your life. And they deserve more credit than they truly get in society these days.
Locksmiths Are Heroes!
So, consider a locksmith next time youโre in a pinch because he is there for you when you need help. Most services are available 7 days a week and the majority of public holidays. Locksmiths generally live and work in the area they service, so unless they have a previous commitment, should get to you relatively quickly. Northriding Mobile Locksmith is one of these awesome companies, and Jay will go above and beyond to get you back to your life in record time.
Next time you find yourself locked out of your car or house, youโll know just who to call – your friendly neighbourhood locksmith, Jay, of course!
Lose your keys, locked out of your car, or even worse, locked out while the ignition is running?

So when those vehicles have lock issues, it intrudes on your daily routine and upsets your schedule. Donโt let a faulty lock ruin your day, call Jay immediately to fix the problem and let you get back to the tasks at hand!
Opel lock picked with no damage.
People misplace their car keys or lock them inside of their car all of the time. Modern vehicles are designed to prevent theft so when a lay person attempts to open their car it can result in irreversible damage. Rely on a dependable professional who understands the locking mechanisms and has the expertise of unlocking your vehicle to do this for you. Your friendly car locksmith can remove broken keys, open jammed locks, and get you back on the road in less than no time.
To significantly reduce bad experiences and getting ripped off by unsavory locksmiths, do a little research and avoid rushing to find the cheapest one who may not get the job done without causing further damage. Safeguard yourself against locksmiths who are unable or refuse to provide a general price range and ensure you provide as much information as possible so that you receive a reasonable and accurate quote.

BMW vehicles and technology evolve over time, at Northriding Mobile Locksmith we have the tools, technology, and machinery to produce keys required for your BMW. Next time you need a key replacement, skip the dealership and call Jay on 082 651 6416.
We believe that losing or misplacing a car key is an honest mistake and shouldnโt be an incredibly costly error, rather, it should be a problem that is relatively easy and quick to resolve. We specialise in fast key cutting and programming solutions at very affordable prices compared to most of our competitors.
Depending on the year and model of BMW, you might have a traditional car key or a state-of-the-art programmable key fob. The majority of BMWโs manufactured after 2000 will have a transponder style key. The key is used to start the engine and the transponder chip inside the key disarms the vehicles standard immobiliser system located in the engine control unit (ECU). In either case, getting a replacement can be a challenge if you donโt have the original key.
Car keys (both laser cut and programmable) are more complicated than standard house or door keys. Your average locksmith might be able to help you unlock your car, but probably wonโt be able to make you a replacement key. The design and functionality of car keys just vary too much from brand to brand. We not only do BMW keys; we also unlock and make replacement keys for a wide variety of other makes; including VW, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, to name a few.
Whether your BMW is an older style key, transponder key or you need an emergency key, we are on hand, best of all, our business is 100% mobile, which means we can come to you, get you a replacement key and get you back on the road ASAP. Give Jay a call on 082 651 6416 for professional service.
First make sure you donโt have a spare key. Many of us put one away as a backup when we lose our key, so take a deep breath and try and remember where it is.
If you decide to call an auto locksmith, remember to provide the exact year, make and model; for e.g. โI lost my 2013 Mercedes-Benz CL car keyโ, or โI lost my 2019 Mercedes EQC push to start keyโ. This is vitally important for the locksmith to check that he has the correct blank.
Ask if the key needs to be programmed or coded, some models do; for e.g., a 2012 Mercedes Sprinter transponder key fob will need to be programmed whereas a 1995 Mercedes E320 will not.
If you think you need a new ignition switch/lock cylinder, first make sure you donโt simply need a new key. Changing the ignition for Mercedes is more expensive than buying a replacement key and it will mean that you will have one key for the doors and another for the ignition.
If the key wonโt turn in the ignition, mention if this is something that has happened for the first time or itโs an ongoing problem.
If you have previously changed the ignition cylinder, tell the locksmith or dealer, as this may prevent them from cutting you a new key by code.
Finally, ensure you have the VIN number of the car and relevant documents to show ownership as this is required in some cases.
IMPORTANT: Most Mercedes models made after 1998 are equipped with high-security keys, which only a few locksmiths can cut. In addition, models made after 2004 are equipped with a push to start high-security system, which in some cases the locksmith may not have stock on hand and will have to order in.
Calling an auto locksmith or dealer near you when you need a replacement is probably the most common thing to do. Based on your location, an auto locksmith can come to you or you may choose to have the vehicle towed to a dealership.
Some points to remember to help you save time and money regardless of the option you choose:
Always ask for a quote. Describe the problem in detail and give the auto locksmith all the details, even if you think they are irrelevant.
If the locksmith has all the details it can speed up the process and make it more cost-effective. Remember to give then your exact location as this may affect the price if you are out of their immediate service area.
Tell the locksmith or dealer if the ignition has previously been changed as far as you know. A previous ignition change may result in different keys for the ignition and doors.
Most Mercedes models today are equipped with chips or transponders; so make sure you mention the exact year, make and model. Check that the locksmith has the necessary tools or if they are going to outsource to a third party โ this too will affect costs.
Have the VIN number available.
Finally, for most Mercedes models, it is not necessary to tow the car to the dealer should you lose your car keys, an auto locksmith should be able to make you new car keys on-site.

Protecting your businessโ valuables is a fantastic idea, but sometimes those same protections can prevent you from accessing the property. In the case of safe lockouts, the concern is often that the owner will never be able to get their valuables back, or that the contents might be harmed by the methods of opening the safe. With Northriding Locksmith & Safe Technician, the safety and protection of this property is of the utmost importance, and Jay will take every precaution to ensure the integrity of the contents.
Most safes work off a dial or combination lock system. This form of locking mechanism works, at its most basic level, on a system of tabbed wheels (the group of which is known as a wheel pack) that are moved by rotating the dial. The tabs of the wheels (known as the fence) all connect at a certain point, and when the wheels line up a bar attached to the nose (a metal hook shaped form) drops to unite the wheel pack. Once the bar falls into the fence the nose must catch in the cam (another wheel with a groove that fits the nose), and it is at this point that the safe can be opened. The way the wheels are manipulated with the dial may vary from safe to safe, but this is no issue for an experienced safe technician as it is redundant to entry.
ย
A digital lock works off a bolting system that prevents the safe from being turned without the code. The bolt (when locked) prevents the handle from moving the boltwork (the part of the safe that is moved by the turning of the handle); and keeps the safe secure. The keypad will send an electronic signal to the bolt and if the code is correct, this will retract the bolt and allow the boltwork to move freely.
Safe technology has become very advanced throughout the decades, and the process of opening an office safe is made more difficult by their more secure nature, compared to the common house safe. Without an override key, the safe will need to either be picked or drilled open; this is best left to a professional, so the contents of the safe are not jeopardised.
It is important to note, that not all locksmiths are skilled in the art of opening safes and may do more damage if they do not know where to drill, thereby leaving your safe compromised and necessary to replace.ย If you are in need of an experienced safe technician contact Jay on 082ย 651 6416; he will require a picture of the safe to determine the category to give you an accurate quote to open or service your safe.

To get a new key for your car you will need to supply Jay with the following:
Make, model and year of vehicle
VIN (vehicle identification number) found on your licence disc
Copy of licence disc (in some instances)
Cost Impacting Factors
The cost to get a new car cut all depends on your car make, model and year. This then depends on parts and tokens required for car key programming and if the car key is basic or remote.
The make of vehicle โ a Ford Fiesta will normally be cheaper than a Land Rover
The model and year of car โ The year and model of vehicle can impact the price
The type of car key โ Do you have a remote fob or transponder car key?
Availability of your keys โ Do you have spare car keys that can be copied, or have you lost your keys? Having no spare key will be the most expensive option.
If you have lost your car keys, we can delete the vehicleโs database history so if they are found by someone else or stolen, they will be inoperable.
We recommend you get quotes from at least three locksmiths in your area, who, will often be cheaper than your local dealership.
Then give Jay a call on 082 651 6416 for guaranteed service satisfaction.
The best advice we can give on reducing the cost when you hire a locksmith is to get at least three different quotes to determine the best price.
However, donโt be mistaken into thinking that a job done quickly should be cheap.
Youโre paying for the countless hours of training, the tools purchased and the knowledge of the locksmith, not the minutes taken to do the job.
Providing as much accurate information

Take the time to find a reliable, local locksmith before you need one in an emergency.
Locksmith scams tend to target home and car owners when they’re at their most vulnerable โฆ in an emergency and needing immediate assistance.
Many consumers think they’re doing the right thing by searching online for a local locksmith, in some cases these locksmiths are run by call centers, in other instances they may not be trained as locksmiths but are in fact handymen. To avoid hiring an unskilled locksmith to solve your locked-out problem, take the time to research the company first.
QUESTIONS TO ASK A LOCKSMITH BEFORE HIRING
Ask these questions before hiring a locksmith. If a business canโt provide detailed answers, donโt hire them.
โข What area do you operate in?
โข Do you need a picture of the lock?
โข Can you give me a quote?
โข What factors will cause this price to change?
โข Do you require cash, or can I pay with an e-wallet or credit card?
โข Whatโs the name of the locksmith who will be coming?
Attached is an example of a customer who contacted us after they had a bad experience with an unqualified handyman presenting as a qualified locksmith. This customer had the “locksmith” lock the keys back in his car when he was required to pay R 1 700, so he paid the R 100 callout fee and then called a reputable locksmith to do the job.
Don’t be a victim of a scam, give Jay a call on 082 651 6416 for professional, affordable service.

There are various reasons for duplicating your car key, (1) you lose your key โ having a backup can relive a lot of unnecessary stress; (2) useful for a family member or friend to have a spare key if you lose your key or lock it in your car this may save you time, money and aggravation.
Regrettably, several people do not get a duplicate because they are worried about the cost. These days, cars are equipped with high-tech car keys and do not want to pay in the event there may be an emergency.
So, how much does it cost to duplicate car keys and the factors influencing the costs:
Who makes the duplicate โ a dealership will almost always cost more than a locksmith due to their higher operational costs and profit margin; a local hardware will duplicate the key but most hardware employees cannot ensure the key will fit or work as intended.
Type of car key โ make and model of your car is central in determining cost, the newer or luxury vehicles will certainly be pricier, while older vehicles may have simpler keys which could reduce the cost. It is crucial that you get the correct information prior to calling for estimates as basic car keys are not that common. Keys now utilise key fobs; transponder chips; remote parts; laser cut keys; and switchblade keys. In some instances, it may be better to order a replacement key.
Type of duplication machine used โ the car key duplicator determines the amount of time it will take to duplicate the key and how complex it is to duplicate, the more time it takes, the higher the cost. A more precise machine will make more precise key cuts, but that takes time and raises the cost.
Should you duplicate your car key or replace it โ there are times when reordering a new one is the preferred choice, some of the modern cars have keyless entry; some have fobs that need reprogramming. In these situations, reordering a new key may be the best bet, it may be expensive, but the best option. In other situations, duplication my be the easier and preferred option as you merely need an emergency set; if your car is older then a duplicate key is best.
Duplicating a car key is cheaper than most people appreciate, however there are some factors that could increase the price of the key. When you are locked out of your car and unable to get to work; home; or the hospital, having a duplicate key is priceless.
Call Jay on 082ย 651 6416 for peace of mind in an emergency and have a duplicate key available.
We can not stress enough the importance of getting a quote from a reputable company BEFORE you get the job done.
It is now almost a daily occurrence where we are contacted by dissatisfied customers of other fly-by-night “locksmith companies” where they are being extorted by individuals charging low call out fees of anything from R 100 – R 250 and then are charged thousands of rands in labour.
We can not assist you after the fact, it is also not our responsibility to phone these scammers and ask about their qualifications or how they can justify their prices. The onus is on you, the customer, to do your due diligence and ask for referrals from people you know, look at the company’s facebook page, check Hello Peter, look on their website, etc. to ensure they are in fact qualified tradesmen with a reputable track record.
This job was done on a Wednesday afternoon during business hours. We would have charged R 1 750.00 for callout, parts and labour.
If a locksmith brandishes a firearm when demanding payment or refuses to leave the premises this is intimidation, you have every right to ask for their company details and report their behaviour to the Locksmith Association of South Africa (LASA) and the South African Police Services (SAPS).
If you are looking for a reputable and qualified locksmith at affordable prices, please contact Jay on +27 82 651 6416.
All security safes are given what is known as an ‘insurance rating’. This indicates the level of security and the maximum amount of cash that an insurance company will cover if stored in the safe overnight. The higher the rating, the more secure the safe. … Obviously not everyone keeps cash in their safe.
There are 8 main categories for safe grading plus the “No SABS” grading. Since insurance companies cover both the premises and the transit risk of money against theft, the area would be a rating consideration. The maximum limit allowed for each category is as follows BUT it is always important to confirm with your individual insurance company what their specifications are:
No SABS Category – R 2 500
SABS Category 1 – R 5 000
To resist attack by means of hand tools for a net total of 15 minutes, usually 12mm thick steel body and door plate.
SABS Category 2 – R 12 500
To resist attack by means of hand tools for a net total of 60 minutes. Door and body plate thickness not less than 20mm steel plate. Two key locks or two combination locks specified by user.
SABS Category 2ADM – R 50 000
To resist attack by means of hand tools for a net total of 60 minute and also attack by electric disk cutting machines. Door and body contains a barrier material, usually 60-70mm thick. Usually has two key locks.
SABS Category 3 – R 100 000
To resist attack for a net total of 60 minute and also attack by all methods including oxyacetylene cutter or until the gasses are exhausted, whichever is the shorter period. Door and body thickness could be to up to 80-90mm, usually three locks.
SABS Category 4 – R 200 000
To resist attack for a net total of 60 minute and also attack by all methods including oxyacetylene cutter to until the gasses are exhausted, whichever is the shorter period.
SABS Category 5 – R 300 000
To resist attack for a net total of 60 minutes and also attack by all methods including attack with a diamond core drill, impact hammer and angle grinders using diamond coated cutting discs. Usually three locks fitted.
You might remember when cars had proper metal keys and you had to unlock each door manually, including the boot and fuel tank. Nowadays, more manufacturers are producing auto-lock cars. Then came power locks and you only had to unlock one door and the rest opened automatically.
For years now, keyless entry is standard across the model range and the autolocking feature is quite common even in some modest models. Today most of the premium models have a keyless entry and start option in which you only need to have the key in your pocket and the car automatically opens all the doors and lets you start the engine by pushing the button, not physically pushing the key into the console.
These are all very convenient and advanced but also can be very problematic. Here are some problems that may arise from driving an auto-lock car!
Forgetting a key inside the car
One of the most common mistakes is when you forget your key inside the car and exit the vehicle. It will automatically lock itself in a matter of seconds and there is no way you can enter it.
The most elegant solution is to find the second key you got when you bought the car, but what to do if the second key is in your house and you are hundreds of kilometers away? Basically, nothing, you could either call somebody to bring you the second key, or call locksmith with their knowledge and tools.
We do not recommend you trying to open the doors using force or breaking the windows because it will trigger the alarm and you will look like youโre trying to steal the car.
Not properly closing the doors or the boot
Some new premium and expensive models have an auto-closing feature that automatically closes the doors.
However, most common models do not have that installed. The problem occurs when you donโt properly close the door or the boot and you left your car parked. The auto-lock feature will engage but will fail to lock the said door.
This will not only leave your car open but it will leave the interior light on. You could experience a dead battery or someone could enter your car. So before you let auto-lock do its thing, check all the doors and the boot before walking away.
Leaving pets or children inside the car
If you need to step out of the vehicle and you have passengers inside, always leave the key in the car. This way you will not lock your passengers or small children inside and leave them trapped.
This could be very dangerous if you are in a hurry and your car key is in your pocket and you have children in the back seat. You have to remember that once you are a couple of meters away from the vehicle it will automatically lock all the doors and anybody who is in the vehicle will have to stay inside until you come back.

One of the more frequent questions I get (and I mean daily) is from someone who’s lost a key to some lock and doesn’t want to pay the callout they’ve been quoted because they have seen it done on You Tube and it looks easy. I feel their pain. Many a time I’ve had to get an emergency tradesman round only to see them twist a knob, tighten a screw, etc. then invoice me for a similar amount. It hurts!
He charges a callout because he spent time learning all about locks. He spent time learning so that he can identify your lock and work out how to open it. He spent money on a wide variety of tools and techniques because he knows certain types of locks might be resistant to MICA, or an EPG, it might require single pin lock picking, a technique on which he has probably spent hundreds of hours, hundreds of locks, and a few lock pick sets perfecting.
It’s easy to say, and believe me we hear it all the time, that a locksmith arrived, stuck a little tool in the lock and it was open in seconds, only then to complain when he asked for the full callout that you initially quoted them. Do you want him to take an hour, to sweat, to have cuts on his fingers? Because if that’s the issue, donโt worry, he already has! The reason he can get the job done in seconds is because he’s already done the sweating, he’s already spent the hours learning, hours upon hours of practising, learning, studying, becoming excellent at his chosen skill. He did that so you don’t have to, so that he doesn’t have to when you want the lock open.
So rather than complain when a locksmith opens your lock in a matter of seconds, be glad you can carry on with your life faster than expected. Of course, there’s another answer to not paying the callout, and I promise you’ll never have to pay another locksmith. Get the skills yourself, get the tools, learn the techniques, and you’ll never need to call a locksmith again.
Volkswagen cars from M plate upwards (1995) use an immobiliser system that prevents the vehicle from starting without the correct key. The immobiliser is deactivated by a small transponder chip that is embedded in the head of the key. Earlier VW models use a separate immobiliser box whilst some of the later models (T plates and upwards) use an immobiliser system that is combined with the dashboard clocks.
With the earlier models of VW cars (pre-2006), locksmiths use a key reader that is inserted into the car lock to read the wafer depths. This allows us to cut a new key without having to remove the lock. The correct transponder chip that is required to deactivate the immobiliser box is then inserted into the key, without the need for a security code first.
Post 2006, (M plate and up until the very latest models), Volkswagenโs parent group VAG decided to pre code the transponder chips. It has made cars more secure and harder to steal because the chip is unique to each vehicle, but it has also made it more difficult for car locksmiths.

Take the time to find a reliable, local locksmith before you need one in an emergency.
Locksmith scams tend to target home and car owners when they’re at their most vulnerable โฆ in an emergency and needing immediate assistance.
Many consumers think they’re doing the right thing by searching online for a local locksmith, in some cases these locksmiths are run by call centres, in other instances they may not be trained as locksmiths but are in fact handymen.
To avoid hiring an unskilled locksmith to solve your locked-out problem, take the time to research the company first.
Here are some tips to follow before you hire:
Look for a truly “local” locksmith: The best way to know whether a locksmith is trustworthy is to research them in advance. Call them, ask them detailed questions and check their reviews. If you’re in a hurry, be wary of locksmith companies that answer calls with generic phrases like โlocksmith services,โ rather than a specific name. If a locksmith cannot or will not provide the business’ legal name – FIND ANOTHER LOCKSMITH.
Ask for a quote: The average locksmith callout starts from approx. R 500, what customers need to take into account is, youโre paying to get a locksmith shop at your home, and with that, thereโs an overhead; a locksmithโs fee pays for tools, continued training and transportation to and from a job. No skilled or reputable locksmith that does not charge a callout could remain in business. Get an estimate before any work begins, including emergency service. Don’t hire a locksmith who refuses to provide a quote.
Inquire about additional charges: ask about extra charges for things like emergency hours, mileage or service call minimums before you agree to have the work performed. The scammers might also claim the lock on your home or car is obsolete and needs to be replaced. Theyโll charge hundreds of rands to replace the lock with what they claim is a high-security lock, but in reality, itโs a cheap lock offering little protection. Reputable locksmiths should be able to answer questions about the intended repair including how theyโll get into your car or home, and the cost of those services. If the locksmith refuses to answer – HANG UP!. This is a sign of someone who either doesnโt know what theyโre doing or plans to overcharge you for a job.
Watch out for fluctuating bids: If the locksmithโs on-site price doesnโt match the phone estimate, donโt just accept the adjusted price and pay the bill without an explanation. Some locksmiths may demand payment after doing shoddy work or inflating the bill; a reputable company won’t drastically change the quoted price without discussing it with the client first.
Don’t allow โdestructive entryโ by a locksmith: If youโre locked out, be wary of locksmiths who recommend or insist on drilling / breaking the lock, forcing you to replace it. There are rare occasions where drilling is necessary, but this should be the last option as most experienced locksmiths possess the skills and tools to unlock almost any door. High security locks are designed to stop people from bumping or picking a door open, and they require specialised keys cut to comply with the lockโs grooves. In these cases, the locksmith may use a cheaper replacement lock as a temporary option while sourcing / ordering a replacement lock of the same security level (with your approval on receipt of a quote for the replacement lock).
QUESTIONS TO ASK A LOCKSMITH BEFORE HIRING
Ask these questions before hiring a locksmith. If a business canโt provide detailed answers, donโt hire them.
Where area do you operate in?
Do you need a picture of the lock?โข
Can you give me a quote? โข
What factors will cause this price to change?โข
Do you require cash, or can I pay with an e-wallet or credit card?โข
Whatโs the name of the locksmith who will be coming?
